Moose are a common site in northwest Colorado. They are amazing animals, shy but resilient, and dangerous if they're threatened. Reintroduced to Colorado in the late 1980s, moose have become one of the great icons of the Colorado Rockies.

Inspired by the slow, frozen creep of the Yampa River flowing through Steamboat Springs in late January. The water is not completely frozen due to the proximity of geothermal hot springs nearby.

Moose are commonly seen on Mt. Werner and the Steamboat Ski Resort. This painting is inspired by a photographe take during Steamboat Resort's Sunset Happy Hour at the top of the Thunderhead chairlift.

Anyone visiting southwest Colorado should take a ride on the Durango-Silverton train. The vintage train travels from Durango to Silverton, Colorado, and back through the scenic Animas River canyon. The ride is especially beautiful in the fall.

The Yampa River Core Trail is a magnificent, paved trail along the Yampa River. There are several beautiful bridges along the trail but the one near the Old Town Hot Springs and the Rabbit Ears Motel is especially beautiful during the fall.

Thunderhead Trail, at Steamboat Resort, is a challenging three-mile climb to the top of the Steamboat Gondola. Near the top, in mid-June, Nodding Dwarf Sunflowers decorate the trail near its end.

Marmots are ubiquitous, large, stocky rodents in mountainous Routt County. They hibernate in the winter and are famous for their whistling alarm calls. They're often called "whistle pigs".

A Steller's jay (often misspelled as "stellar jay") is a striking bird in the crow family. It is known for its intelligence, bold personality, and loud, varied calls.

This painting was inspired by a photograph of a mother Black Bear and her two cubs. Black Bears are curious but fairly shy animals that tend to keep people at a distance. Unfortunately, as Black Bears become more comfortable around people, they become a threat, not just to humans but to themselves.
